Discover Kingdoms of the Sea at the New England Aquarium

New England coastal waters are known for being chilly even in the hottest summer months, so you probably won’t want to take a dip yourself this September. Luckily for us, though, the New England Aquarium makes deep sea exploration possible any day of the year here in Boston. As one of North America’s largest aquariums, NEA’s main exhibit is the Giant Ocean Tank, a 200,000-gallon cylindrical enclosure with a wrap-around circular staircase that allows visitors to view 140 species of marine life as they ascend to the top of the multi-story tank. At the base of the tank is a 150,000-gallon enclosure housing several different kinds of penguins, which live on synthetic rock islands. The aquarium hosts many smaller exhibits as well, including tropical and freshwater galleries that compare ecosystems from distant corners of the world, as well as a tide pool that offers visitors a chance to touch New England sea creatures, including urchins, starfish, snails, and crabs.
